The newly formed working group is concerned with quantitiative evaluation of intrusion detection systems, with special attention given to such systems in virtualized cloud environments.
Given that security concerns are one of the greatest showstoppers for the wide adoption of cloud computing, many academic and industrial organizations are nowadays conducting extensive research on novel intrusion detection systems (IDSes) specifically designed to operate in virtualized cloud environments.
The IDS Benchmarking Working Group is concerned with quantitiative evaluation of intrusion detection systems (IDSes), with special attention given to benchmarking IDSes in virtualized cloud environments. The benchmarks developed by this group (referred to as research benchmarks) are intended to enable evaluation of IDSes through the use of representative benign and malicious workloads, metrics that quantify IDS properties with respect to cloud platform features and scientifically rigorous methodology.
An additional activity of this group is research of novel and low resource-demanding intrusion detection techniques applicable in cloud environments, such as performance attack signatures. The benchmarks of the IDS Benchmarking Working Group may not necessarily be standardized through the SPEC process.
Current participants in the IDS Benchmarking Working Group include University of Coimbra (Portugal), Siemens Corporate Research (USA) and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany).
